Pregnancy is a tough gig! It has its many ups and downs with raging hormones, changing bodies and aches and pains. Of course, it has its’ beautiful moments too! From the moment you find out you have a little human growing inside you, to hearing their heartbeat for the first time and feeling those little kicks inside your growing belly – it’s such an amazing time in your life. That’s why it’s so important to document these special moments. However, sometimes it’s just not possible to do a professional shoot due to time restraints, money restraints and COVID has thrown us another curveball. Don’t stress because we have you covered with these 5 tips to do your own DIY pregnancy photoshoot at home. Get hubby or a friend involved and have a little fun!
Pick an outfit
Decide your outfit or outfits in advance. A popular choice is some matching lacey underwear, a robe or a gorgeous maternity dress. Mudita have a large range or beautiful maternity dresses to choose from for the perfect boho pregnancy shoot. Feeling brave and want to do a nude shoot? Try going underwear less for a few hours before so those underwear lines don’t show up in your photos.
Hair and Make-Up
Get yourself dolled up as if you were going out for the night. Think about the look you want whether it’s soft curls with natural makeup for a softer, bohemian look or heavier makeup with sleek hair for a bold, elegant and sophisticated look.
Lighting
Having good lighting is important for any kind of photoshoot. If you are shooting outside, try and time it for an hour before sunset when the light is softest. It is best to avoid direct sunlight as it will cast shadows. If shooting inside, try and use natural light where possible. Have a look around the house to see what rooms have the best lighting during a certain time during the day. A nice setting could be in front of a window with sheer curtains drawn to capture your gorgeous silhouette.
Posing
Set up your camera slightly above you looking down and pose on the side to show off that beautiful bump. Think about what your arms and legs are doing too. Try popping your front knee, and make sure your arm is not flat against your side to flatter your shape. Pull your elbow slightly back whilst resting your hand on that beautiful belly and glance slightly down. Need a little inspiration? Try jumping on pinterest and searching maternity shoots. There are some beautiful images there to create a mood board to see what poses may work for you. Be playful and try adjusting your pose slightly in between each shot to get the best angles.
Get the family involved
If you have other kids or fur babies it would be lovely to capture them in a few shots. If you can get hubby in a few that would be nice too. It’s a special moment for the whole family so it would be great to have them all involved too. Again, if you’re looking for inspiration for family shots do a quick search in Pinterest. Be sure to show whoever is helping with the photos what poses interest you and they can help direct the family how to position themselves to get the perfect shot.
One day when your old and grey, you will have the grandkids gathered around looking at photos of you with their Mother or Father in your belly. How special is that!
